Decoding Type

As part of my theoretical studies, I dedicated my dissertation to the politics of multiscript type design and the Unicode character encoding standard.

By interviewing practitioners such as Nadine Chahine and Toshi Omagari at Monotype, I discovered how the Western conception of type and the limitations of the Unicode standard impact other scripts.

As a visual response to the content, I generated a pattern with JavaScript which orders the Unicode values of all the characters present specifically in my thesis by their frequency of use. Then transferred on to print with the method of screen printing, the pattern seeks to exhibit the underlying strings of Unicode to the viewer.
